Social Media Breakfast Edmonton #2: 8:00 - 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 28, 2011 CBC Centre Stage

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Jan. 20, 2011) - The second instalment of the social media networking event, the Edmonton Social Media Breakfast (SMBYEG), will be held on Friday, January 28 at 8:00 a.m. at the CBC Centre Stage. Based on the overwhelming success of thirteen Calgary Social Media Breakfasts, McQ Design Strategies is pleased to organize this second Edmonton event.

This month's speaker will be Mike Spear who presents regularly at conferences around North America on such varied issues as social media, science communications, and genetic testing. He'll bring his social media, science communication and extensive media background to bear on the two solitudes that seem to exist between mainstream media and social media. He feels that the two camps often live in their own bubbles and forget that they need each other to be successful.

Seating is limited and fills up quickly so hurry to book your place on Eventbrite.com. Only those with advanced reservations will be permitted to attend.

Stay after the discussion to network and share ideas within the realm of social media. Marketers, PR pros, entrepreneurs, bloggers, podcasters, new-media fanatics, and online social networkers are all welcome to attend.

About the Presenter

Mike Spear

Mike Spear first became involved with the online world and digital media way back in the 1980s when he had one of the first Apple II computers in Calgary. He moved on to become a journalist with the CBC and was part of the team which introduced desktop journalism into the newsroom.

In his role as Director of Corporate Communications for Genome Alberta, Spear contributes to papers on science communication, social media, genetic testing and electronic health records. Genome Alberta has created a successful Genomics Application on Facebook and Spear writes and manages a corporate blog called Mikenomics.

SMBYEG houses an open environment to share today's best and worst examples of social media, as practiced by individuals, industries and organizations in Edmonton and around the world. Guest speakers share their experience and expertise of social media use, followed by an opportunity to network with a community of like-minded individuals.

The SMB was founded by Bryan Person in August 2007 as an event for social media newbies and experts to come together to eat, meet, share, and learn. The breakfast series began in Boston and has now spread to more than three dozen cities around the world. The Calgary and Edmonton chapters of the SMB were started by Scott Baird of McQ Design Strategies as a place for social media enthusiasts to discuss effective practices and new techniques.
