Social Media Week Returns to Toronto

Industries Come Together for In-Depth Discussion of Social Media

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 18, 2011) - The second annual Social Media Week Toronto will kick-off on February 7 as part of the city's participation in a series of simultaneous global events in New York, San Francisco, Rome, Paris, London, Hong Kong, São Paulo, and Istanbul.

Pre-registration for more than 20 Toronto events, which run until February 11th, is now open, with additional events being added daily, in the weeks leading up to the conference.

Social Media Week was born out of a collective desire to both understand and explore social media's role within all facets of our society. It is a global platform of local events in host cities around the world, and online participation through social and mobile media.

"Unlike traditional conferences, Social Media Week acts as a 'distributed conference', which allows for a more informal conversational exchange amongst interested parties," says Eli Singer, founder and president of Entrinsic, a social media communications agency, and co-curator for Social Media Week Toronto. "It is an active call to the community to contribute to the discussion on how we as a society understand and engage in social media".

Local event partners include Facebook, BMO, Ryerson University, NKPR, Artez Interactive and WWF Canada, among others. Marketwire has signed on as a local media partner. For a list of all the great organizations partnered with Social Media Week to date, visit http://socialmediaweek.org/toronto/.

"Part of what makes Social Media Week so unique is its diversity; there's a dedication to include industry sectors in a way that really demonstrates the breadth of social media throughout our culture. Whether you are interested in architecture, business, marketing, food or fashion, you can find an event that's right for you," says Jyotika Malhotra, a digital industry veteran, consultant and co-curator for Social Media Week Toronto.

Global support for Social Media Week comes from headline sponsor NOKIA and supporting sponsors PepsiCo, Meebo, JWT and global media partner Weber Shandwick, all of whom have come together to make this possible.
