Society of Manufacturing Engineers: Oil & Gas Technologies the Focus of Manufacturing Innovations Conference in Edmonton, June 16-17, 2009

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - May 1, 2009) - The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) presents the Manufacturing Innovations Conference, June 16 and 17, 2009, in Edmonton, Alberta, to showcase new technologies and applications for manufacturing in the Oil & Gas Industry. The conference will be held in conjunction with the Western Manufacturing Technology Show (WMTS) at Northlands AgriCom in Edmonton, Alberta, on June 16, 17 and 18, 2009.

"Although the recession is having a significant effect on many manufacturers in Western Canada, a third (1) of our attendees anticipate their business activity improving over the next 12 to 18 months," said Paul Minich, general manager, Canadian operations, SME. "This is an ideal time for anyone in manufacturing to stay on top of the latest technologies and professional development available."

Conference attendees receive full access to the show floor, keynote speaker, reception, the town hall, lunch on both days and exclusive technology sessions and demonstrations.

The conference kicks off with the June 16 morning keynote address by the Government of Alberta's Honourable Mel Knight, Energy Minister, and Annette Trimbee, Advanced Education and Technology Deputy Minister. They present an update on Alberta's Action Plan-Bringing Technology to Market. Next, two exclusive technology sessions focus on manufacturing solutions and advanced non-destructive testing, followed by time to explore the WMTS show floor. The day ends with a networking reception.

On June 17, the day starts off with the WMTS Town Hall Experience, an interactive panel discussion on managing manufacturing operations in a rollercoaster commodity market, moderated by Robert Moore, QCI Consulting Group. The town hall is followed by a technology session on productivity enhancement initiatives, a luncheon featuring Don Thompson, president, Oil Sands Developers Group, and general manager of regulatory and external relations, Syncrude Canada Ltd., who will speak on how oil sands innovations and technology are the key to current and future challenges. The afternoon closes with a technology session on welding and automation technologies for pressure equipment and pipelines.
