Society of Energy Professionals Welcomes Parkinson's Resignation

Attention: Assignment Editor, Business/Financial Editor, Energy Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Dec. 8, 2006) - The Society of Energy Professionals welcomed the sudden resignation of Hydro One CEO Tom Parkinson. "The recent Auditor General's report and media stories has pointed out serious issues with Hydro One's leadership. The resignation of Mr. Parkinson clears the way for the organization to restore public confidence in this important crown corporation," said Andrew Müller, President of the Society.

During testimony before the Legislature's Standing Committee reviewing Hydro One, the Society pointed out concerns about management practices that damaged Hydro One and led to the longest labour disruption and only strike in the Society's history. "This is an important opportunity for the government to restore leadership that will improve employee morale and restore the public's confidence," said Müller. "To that end the Society is prepared to work with the government in finding a solution at Hydro One and restoring positive labour relations. We welcome the opportunity to work together on this important issue."

"We believe the government is on the right track by shining light on management practices at Hydro One and Ontario Power Generation (OPG) as the recent Auditor General's report demonstrates," said Müller. "With its commitments on energy, the McGuinty government has demonstrated it is working to ensure Ontario has an adequate supply of safe, affordable and reliable energy. Our members share that commitment and look forward to delivering the best energy system in Canada."
