Socket Mobile Introduces Family of 2D Bar Code Scanners

Socket Responds to the Fast-Growing Market of Applications Requiring 2D Scanning Capabilities

NEWARK, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- April 17, 2007 -- Socket Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCKT), dba Socket Mobile, Inc., an innovative provider of mobile productivity products, extends its industry leadership with the introduction of the Socket CompactFlash Scan Card 5X, a high-performance, stacked-linear bar code scanner. It is the first device in a new line of Socket 2D bar code scanners designed to address the fast-growing market for 2D and omni-directional bar code scanning. Future versions in the family line will include the Socket Cordless Hand Scanner 7X and the Socket Cordless Ring Scanner 9X.

"With the promise of increased efficiency and regulatory mandate compliance, the number of applications that require high-performance, 2D bar code scanning capabilities continue to grow," said Bob Zink, senior vice president of worldwide sales and marketing at Socket Mobile, Inc. "Combined with the Socket SoMo 650 handheld computer and third party application software, the 5X delivers a flexible, high-performance business mobility solution."

According to Venture Development Corporation (VDC), a technology market research and strategy firm, the global 2D bar code scanning market is forecasted to experience a compounded annual growth rate of 19% from 2005 - 2010. The growth is expected to be particularly strong in the retail in-store and healthcare vertical industries, among others.

2D bar code symbologies provide the ability to generate small labels with a high-data capacity that can be used in a wide variety of environments. Spurred by regulatory mandates and the need to cut costs, many industries continue to implement 2D bar code applications.

The Socket CF Scan Card 5X reads all popular linear, stacked-linear, 2D/Matrix and postal symbols, including MaxiCode, Data Matrix, QR Code and PDF417, among others.

Pricing & Availability

The Socket CF Scan Card 5X carries a manufacturers suggested retail price of $679.00 USD. General worldwide availability of the Socket CF Scan Card 5X is expected in the latter part of the second quarter of 2007. More information about other high-performance 2D imagers from Socket will be made available when the devices are introduced.
