Socrata Welcomes the Opportunity to Help Data.Gov and Federal Agencies Deliver Universal Data Access

Socrata Among Awardees Selected by GSA for $46 Million Blanket Purchase Agreement

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON--(Marketwire - Oct. 5, 2010) - Socrata Inc., a leading provider of Open Data Services for federal, state and local governments has been chosen to deliver dataset hosting services for Data.Gov and participating federal agencies, through its GSA reseller and fulfillment partner, Alamo City Engineering Services. The multi-vendor, $46M blanket purchase agreement (BPA) was also awarded to federal government contractors CGI Federal, Eyak Technology, Smartronix and Qbase.

Socrata's selection is in recognition of its proven ability to deliver three critical elements for the success of Data.Gov as both a technology endeavor and as a ground breaking policy initiative:

  1. Promote agency participation in the Data.Gov ecosystem
Data.Gov and federal agencies need to have access to an Open Data platform that benefits all participants and creates a network effect that results in a massive increase in the quantity and quality of the data being shared.
  1. Design the Data.Gov ecosystem as a public utility
For Open Data initiatives to be successful, ordinary, non-technical constituencies need to be able to find the data, interactively explore and make sense of it and ultimately make use of it.
  1. Expose the Data.Gov ecosystem to civic application developers
It is vital to deliver a platform that developers can readily access in an open, ubiquitous, uniform and consistent way, in order to unlock the government's data assets for innovation.

The choice of Socrata, a venture-backed startup, reflects a new attitude and a new vision for Federal Government Information Technology investments under the direction and stewardship of Chief Information Officer Vivek Kundra and Chief Technology Officer Aneesh Chopra.

Kevin Merritt, Socrata's founder and CEO says, "This is a departure from the old way of doing things. In the past, these projects would have turned into multi-year implementations including thousands of billable hours developing custom, one-off, unproven solutions. Now we're delivering a turnkey platform for innovation based on market-tested, cloud-based technologies and fresh, outside-the-beltway thinking. This isn't alpha code or even beta code. It's a proven, commercial-off-the-shelf solution already in use by numerous city, county, state and federal government organizations."

Socrata looks forward to partnering with the Data.Gov team and the Federal CIO Council to deliver a vibrant Open Data ecosystem that provides a vital service for our nation and, by example, the world.
