Solar Industry Applauds Premier Prentice's Views on Renewable Energy

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Sept. 19, 2014) - The Canadian Solar Industries Association (CanSIA) today welcomed Alberta Premier Jim Prentice's positive views on renewable energy as expressed in his recent Globe and Mail interview.

The Globe noted that "Mr. Prentice, a former federal environment minister, is also shaping a new climate-change strategy that will see the province shutter many of its coal plants and replace them with new investment in renewable energy sources such as wind and solar."

The Premier is quoted in the article as saying "I think what we should be doing is making investments in those areas (wind and solar) in the context of an overall climate plan for the province."

"We are very encouraged to hear that the Premier strongly believes in renewable energy and that he will move forward with a new Renewable Energy Framework," said CanSIA President and CEO, John Gorman. "The sun shines in Alberta more than in any other province and with the cost of solar at an all time low, Alberta can become a leader in renewable energy by adopting good solar energy policy. A strong solar energy market means giving consumers the power of choice, reducing GHG emissions, and diversifying electricity supply," said Gorman

In July 2014, CanSIA released its policy paper on solar energy policy options for Albertans. The paper, "From Proven Reserve to Developed Resource: Realizing the True Value of Solar Energy in Alberta", is the result of research and consultations with the Alberta government and industry stakeholders. It includes policy recommendations that would ensure a meaningful role for solar energy in Alberta's electricity mix.

CanSIA will hold its fifth annual Solar West conference October 1-2 when key thought leaders, decision-makers and solar energy experts will gather in Calgary to discuss the path to a "Made-in-Alberta" solar solution.
