Solarflare Accelerates Memcached Big Data Applications by 51 Percent

Leading 10 Gigabit Ethernet Networking Company Announces New OpenOnload Enhancements, Targeting Social Networking and Other Data Intensive Applications

IRVINE, CA--(Marketwire - May 2, 2011) - Solarflare (, the pioneer in high-performance, low latency 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE), server adapters and software, announced today new updates to its OpenOnload® and EnterpriseOnload™ middleware, geared toward accelerating big data applications. By using Solarflare OpenOnload middleware in combination with Solarflare SFN5122F 10GbE SFP+ server adapters, customers can improve response times by 51 percent for memcached queries at 212,000 transactions per second.

Memcached is a high-performance, distributed-memory, object-caching system that can accelerate dynamic web applications by alleviating database load. By using Solarflare OpenOnload application acceleration middleware, users can reduce the overheads associated with memcached access, increasing the aggregate transaction rate and reducing application response time, particularly for cloud and other scale-out infrastructures.

Earlier this year, Solarflare augmented its middleware portfolio by releasing Solarflare EnterpriseOnload that included bundled service and support for large enterprise customers. The latest releases of OpenOnload 1.1 and EnterpriseOnload 1.1 include new features that provide performance enhancements in a variety of application environments. New features include an affinity driver to map applications to specific server cores, PCIe bus optimizations to reduce latency by up to 300 nanoseconds, acceleration of the Linux Pipe command that speeds communication between two processes on a server, and a socket and stack control API that enables customers to control and fine tune acceleration options on a per-socket basis. OpenOnload leverages the adapter's scalable vNIC architecture that provides up to 2,048 protected interfaces to map applications directly to the NIC hardware. OpenOnload uses queue pairs made available by Solarflare's scalable vNIC architecture to create faster, more direct connections with applications. It bypasses the OS kernel and enables applications to increase their network load, while increasing their performance.

Solarflare's server adapters and OpenOnload are designed for high-performance networks that are uniquely suited to handle the server access network requirements of big data environments. The trend toward big data is being fueled by the availability of high-performance servers, lower-cost 10GbE connectivity and scale-out storage. IT managers designing social media applications, Web 2.0 and other data-intensive applications are using such technologies as memcached, Hadoop and MapReduce to enhance the performance of search and analytics of big data.

Customers who are dealing with big data are faced with several technical challenges in their networks, including traffic bottlenecks and inadequate performance in the server access layer in the links between their servers and access switches.
