Solarflare Announces Support for Mac OS® X to Unlock the Power of 10 Gigabit Networking for Apple Mac-Based Video Content Developers

IRVINE, CA--(Marketwire - Apr 11, 2011) - Solarflare, the pioneer in 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE), announced today support for Apple's Mac OS X operating system. This will bring the high performance of Solarflare SFN5500 10GbE server adapters to the Mac OS X video production environment, as well as to other Mac OS-based work groups. Solarflare will showcase its 10GbE server adapters at the NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) Show in Arista Networks' booth SL11205, at the Las Vegas Convention Center, April 11-14, 2011.

Solarflare will support Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard and above with its Solarflare® Midrange and Enterprise SFN5500 family of dual- and single-port 10GbE server adapters. Mac OS X is engineered to leverage advanced multi-core server and workstation architectures. Built on a UNIX foundation, Mac OS X delivers 64-bit performance and incorporates industry-leading developer tools for creating video content. Now, video content creation firms using Apple® Macs will be able to leverage fully 10 Gigabit networking. Content developers will be able to use Apple's advanced graphics hardware to create animated user interfaces and visualizations that simultaneously layer different media types, such as text, 2D graphics, OpenGL rendering and QuickTime video, all in real-time over 10GbE networks.

Solarflare's support for 10GbE also enhances the high-performance Ethernet storage capabilities of video production houses and studios. Most content creators have amassed very large content libraries and use databases to manage project workflows, and to track all the images and videos in order to repurpose them for new projects. When running over a 10GbE network, Solarflare's best-in-class NFS (Network File System) performance can provide very fast access to content libraries to improve productivity and reduce the wait times of large file ingest.

Solarflare's SFN5500 server adapters feature numerous advanced functions for the digital content creator, including support for a rich set of stateless offloads, such as TSO, RSO, IPv4/IPv6 and TCP/IP checksum. Solarflare also supports the acceleration of TCP and UDP application traffic with its OpenOnload middleware.
