SolarWinds Launches Orion Failover Engine to Ensure Continuous Network Visibility

The New Orion Scalability Engine Provides High Availability and Disaster Recovery Options for Network Management Systems

AUSTIN, TX--(Marketwire - September 1, 2010) -  SolarWinds® (NYSE: SWI), a leading provider of powerful and affordable IT management software to more than 95,000 customers worldwide, announced today the latest addition to its Orion Scalability Engines, Orion Failover Engine (FoE). Orion Scalability Engines enable IT teams to scale the network management capabilities of Orion® as their network grows and needs change. Specifically, Orion FoE monitors the health of SolarWinds' Orion servers to ensure IT teams never lose visibility into the performance of their IT environment.

Organizations rely heavily on their network management systems to provide availability metrics for critical applications and network performance to ensure the daily operations of their business. If something should happen to a user's primary Orion server, Orion FoE automatically provides a two-minute failover to a remote server to ensure that there is no interruption network performance visibility. The passive failover server assumes the full identity of the Orion server and assumes all monitoring, alerting, reporting, and data collection responsibility.

SolarWinds collaborated with Neverfail®, a global software company specializing in affordable continuous availability and disaster recovery solutions, to accelerate the development and delivery of Orion FoE to its customers. Neverfail's ability to focus on application availability and experience working with vendors like VMware made for a natural and successful relationship with SolarWinds and its IT community.

"When it comes to implementing an IT management strategy, IT teams often forget a step and don't have a high availability and disaster recovery option," said Sanjay Castelino, VP of product management and product marketing, SolarWinds. "With Orion Network Performance Monitor, users can easily accommodate network management reliability through the addition of a scalability engine such as Orion FoE. It's an ideal disaster recovery solution for networks that demand high availability and performance."

Orion Failover Engine highlights:

  • Provides two-minute failover for your business-critical network management system
  • Delivers instant e-mail notification if key health thresholds for your network management system are crossed
  • Supports the customization of failover rules which can trigger based on application, system, process, and service health thresholds
  • Provides high availability and ensures business continuity with real-time monitoring of your Orion implementation (including Orion modules and polling engines)
  • Saves time by automating failover tasks such as creating processes, restarting services, or updating DNS records
  • Prevents downtime with almost instantaneous automated failover when component failures occur
  • Minimizes WAN traffic during disaster recovery scenarios by leveraging WAN data compression optimization

Orion customers looking for additional Microsoft® SQL failover coverage can select from several third-party options for their Orion database. Microsoft SQL Server provides basic options for log shipping and database mirroring. More advanced SQL failover solutions are available from other providers, including Neverfail who has independently developed a failover option for Orion's SQL database, Neverfail for Orion Database. The combination of the SolarWinds Orion FoE and Neverfail for Orion Database provides maximum protection against outages of the Orion network monitoring infrastructure.
