Solid Landings Behavioral Health's Outdoor-Based Wellness Program Expands to Sure Haven Women's Treatment Center

COSTA MESA, CA--(Marketwired - Oct 9, 2014) - The awe-inspiring restorative powers of a traditional wilderness program combined with Solid Landings addiction treatment programs are a recipe for success. The outcome of the Peaks and Valleys program in Rock Solid Recovery has been so well-received, that the program has now expanded to Sure Haven, allowing a select number of clients to feel the healing powers of nature, while focusing on recovery, fellowship, and outdoor recreation.

"We set up camp the first day in Big Bear, and picked a nearby peak to hike up. The girls thought we were kidding when we pointed to the peak we planned to hike up, but they all gave it a shot," explained Veronica Parker, Sure Haven's Adventure Therapist. "The next day, the girls spent some quiet time around the lake before ziplining. They absolutely loved this experience. Some of them were a bit nervous, but they all embraced it and walked through their fears."

Peaks and Valleys allows clients the opportunity to experience nature in a profoundly moving way. And with the help of experienced program leaders, the healing powers and the spiritual element of the outdoors will be used to help clients in their search for direction, inner peace, and achieving sobriety in their lives.

"A lot of clients find peace in the outdoors because being in the wilderness is an opportunity to evolve their spirituality," explained Lena Fancher, Sure Haven's Adventure Counselor. "And our clinical groups allow our clients to open up to one another, and face their fears together."

Peaks and Valleys counselors introduce clients to a selection of activities including mountain climbing, camping, fishing, boating, and hiking. But in the program, it's more than just enjoying the outdoors, it's welcoming the new experience, and learning through challenges.

"On our last trip, we spent part of our time in pretty deep groups, focused on fears in the recovery journey, and letting go of the person they were when they were using," explained Parker. "On the last morning, the clients went on a mindfulness hike. They were instructed to pick a fairly heavy rock that represented a character defect, and carry it with them throughout the hike. Afterwards, they processed how they related this metaphor to their own recovery."
