Solix BioSystems™ Sells and Delivers First Commercial Lumian™ AGS4000

FT. COLLINS, CO--(Marketwire - Apr 19, 2011) - Solix BioSystems today announced the first sale and delivery of its Lumian AGS4000 high productivity, fully integrated algae cultivation system to New Mexico State University (NMSU), Las Cruces, New Mexico. The Lumian AGS4000 is located at NMSU's Fabian Garcia Science Center and will be used to optimize algae growth parameters as well as to produce biomass for downstream testing.

"At NMSU we are building our algae cultivation capability using both open ponds and now the Lumian AGS4000 from Solix BioSystems," said Peter Lammers, Technical Director of the Algae Bioenergy Program at NMSU. "We need a way to reliably produce algae at high volumetric productivity and Solix's Lumian AGS4000 is the only system that meets our needs at the required scale. We were able to purchase the system as part of a grant from the US Air Force focused on the use of algae to produce jet fuel." Professor Shuguan Deng from the Chemical Engineering faculty and principal investigator on the USAF grant will be using algal biomass produced at the Fabian Garcia site to improve oil extraction technologies. "The Lumian AGS4000 will allow us to produce standardized algal biomass for extraction, refining and jet fuel testing experiments with our collaborators on the Air Force project at the University of Central Florida," commented Professor Deng.

"We are delighted to be working with NMSU, which has an aggressive program in algal biofuel research," said Joel Butler, Solix's Chief Executive Officer. "We believe the high productivity and reliability of the Lumian AGS4000 will be a real enhancement to the algae program at NMSU."

The Lumian AGS4000 is the first commercial algae cultivation system (AGS™) from Solix. It uses Solix's proprietary photobioreactor technology, or Lumian panels. The Company has been successfully cultivating algae continuously in its AGS at both its Ft. Collins facility as well as at its demonstration plant in Southwestern Colorado with no culture crashes. Solix commercialized the 4000 liter Lumian AGS4000 based on the market need for a high productivity, reliable algae cultivation system that enables customers to undertake R&D development of algae cultivation outdoors as well as provide a source of inoculum for larger scale systems. The commercial availability of 4000 liter Lumian AGS4000 was announced previously.
