Solo Exhibition by Tavar Zawacki, aka ABOVE, Curated by DK Johnston, Opens July 14 at the Quin

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - Jul 11, 2016) - International street artist Tavar Zawacki, best known to his fans as ABOVE, brings his signature style to the global street art series at the Quin hotel on July 14 with a solo exhibition curated by DK Johnston. New York's quintessential luxury lifestyle hotel, the Quin, located at the corner of 57th Street and Sixth Avenue, has become a welcoming exhibition space for artists from around the world as a result of its acclaimed Quin Arts program.

ABOVE's solo exhibition at the Quin will feature 36 works of handmade sculptural relief, using acrylic and resin on wood. The artist is also planning to inaugurate a graffiti courtyard within the hotel during his residency, calling to mind his large-scale outdoor works. The exhibit will kick off with an invitation-only artist salon at the Quin on July 14, where hotel guests and friends of the Quin Arts program will have an opportunity to interact with ABOVE and his unique artworks.

"ABOVE has distinguished himself from many of his peers in the street art community with a move from figurative expression to geometric abstraction," said DK Johnston, curator of the Quin Arts program. "He's really one of the only artists in the street art movement speaking with this style of voice. And what's more, he's always thinking upwards, with an optimism and enthusiasm that resonates through his art."

Tavar Zawacki was born in California in 1981 and now makes his home in Berlin. He has been creating public art since 1995, when he first began tagging "ABOVE" graffiti on freight trains. At the age of 19, ABOVE moved to Paris, where he started painting his trademark arrow icon pointing 'above.' Over the past 17 years he has painted artworks in the streets of over 100 cities in 60 different countries around the world. During this period, the artist has become known for several distinct styles of street art, including multi-layer, full color social and political stencils, large text-based painted murals and colorful abstract arrow compositions. ABOVE's stencil and text-based artworks usually have a strong message or awareness about social, political, or international current events, while his abstract works are a visual language of shape, color, and form.

"The opportunity to interact with global artists at salons or during their residency has become uniquely valuable and meaningful to our guests," said Vincent Vienne, managing director of the Quin. "Quin Arts makes art and its creators accessible through an ongoing series of significant events, intimately connecting guests with quintessential New York culture and its creative community."

The ABOVE exhibition will be on view from July 14 through mid-August in the hotel's lobby level. Artist salon and pre-sales information for ABOVE's solo show at the Quin are available by emailing DKJ@artsfund.com. For more information on Quin Arts, visit www.thequinhotel.com.
