Somerville, MA, Joins the Ranks of Open Data Innovators on the Socrata Platform

Mayor Curtatone to Headline a September 20th Webcast on Open Data as the Innovation Equalizer for Small Towns

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON--(Marketwire - Aug. 30, 2012) - Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone today unveiled New England's first Socrata-powered Open Data Cloud, adding the City of Somerville, population 78,000, to the ranks of the world's leading Open Data innovators and Socrata customers like New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, Austin and Seattle.

The new cloud-based portal, located at, will serve as a strategic data platform that supports cost-saving innovations in how Somerville delivers actionable information to residents; deploys digital services; makes data-driven decisions; and engages communities in problem-solving.

"As we continue our efforts to provide the best possible customer service, including transparent government management practices, we've been fortunate to find an innovative partner like Socrata," said Mayor Curtatone. "This partnership will give residents and community members much deeper access to City data and work order tracking systems -and will deliver that access on a more consistent basis. It's a great new way for residents to understand how their government works, and to hold us accountable to our goal of making Somerville a great place to live, work, play and raise a family."

The initial launch of the site offers residents self-service access to visualize the city's 311 service requests in their neighborhoods by location, type, date and status. The intuitive map-based 311 Explorer application allows citizens to check the status of their own tickets, understand what is happening in their communities and compare service levels across different city departments like public works, traffic, parking and inspection services.

The site also includes interactive datasets covering a wide range of high-visibility topics such as:

  • The results of the 2011 Wellbeing Survey, visualized and analyzed by ward
  • The City Operating Budgets for Fiscal Years 2010 - 2013
  • Results of the latest ACE (Accurate Courteous Easy) Service Scorecard, visualized by department

The Somerville Open Data initiative will be highlighted during an hour-long webcast, headlined by Mayor Curtatone and presented by Somerville representatives on September 20th, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. EST.

"The City of Somerville is one of the nation's first cities to leverage our population-based pricing," said Kevin Merritt, Founder and CEO of Socrata. "We're excited to be working with a recognized innovator like Somerville to tailor our market-leading product for the needs of small and mid-sized communities, so they can deliver open data experiences that are similar to our major customers like New York City, Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle."
