A London-based pro photographer ended up giving away valuable high-res downloads of his work in exchange for public votes in a last-ditch bid to win the top prize in a Sony Ericsson competition.

Ben Roberts, 29, was so taken with the opportunity to be a Sony Ericsson Official Photographer in 2009 that he offered his high-quality pictures as a sweetener to would be voters in the final round of the competition to promote the Sony Ericsson C905 Cyber-Shot(TM) cameraphone.

In the end, it was just enough to edge ahead of his nearest rival - runner-up and 29-year-old mum-of-two, Donna Mills, from Burnley, Lancs.

That means it'll be Ben who lands up on the red carpet snapping the stars with his Cyber-Shot(TM) at a series of Sony Ericsson events throughout 2009.

Ben said: "Being a photographer, when I get the chance for a mobile phone upgrade I seek out the phone with the best camera - usually to be disappointed by the poor image quality. The C905 is the first cameraphone I have used where I have actually thought, 'damn, that's a pretty good photograph.'

"So, kudos to Sony Ericsson for managing to fit this quality into such a neat package."

Hundreds entered the first round to find keen snappers via Flickr (http://www.flickr.com) and a final five were each handed the top-of-the-line 8.1 megapixel Sony Ericsson C905 Cyber-Shot(TM) cameraphone to complete the second part of their assignment.

At www.c905photocompetition.com . Ben, Donna, Jim McGovern, Ila Desai and Phil Sharp went head to head responding to a different brief each day: Loneliness; Still Life; My Best Friend; The Fast Life; Freedom.

Every one of the pictures were taken using the C905 Cyber-Shot(TM)

It was up to them to gather public support. And they gathered over 15,000 votes in just two weeks.

Ben was announced as the winner on Friday December 19, 2008.
