South Pacific Minerals Corp.: Hole KD 001 Completed at 543.76m Kodu Deposit, Papua New Guinea

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - July 20, 2005) - South Pacific Minerals Corp. (TSX VENTURE:SPZ) -

South Pacific Minerals Corp.'s first diamond core drill hole (KD 001) has been drilled vertically to a depth of 543.76m, in the north eastern sector of the known Kodu mineralised zone. The new company owned TGD500 man portable drilling rig is performing well, with the hole being terminated in broken ground.

Megascopic copper minerals were noted over a 352m total vertical interval, with the drill hole extending mineralisation at depth by an estimated 150m or 45% from the base of previous drilling at 660m RL.

Hole KD 002 was commenced 19/7/2005 at a location approximately 200m SW of KD001. The intent of the hole is to document the copper /gold / molybdenum mineralisation to its depth extent further along it's known strike.

SPZ Exploration Manager - Mr. Peter Ruzicka (BSc., B.App.Sc., MSc. in progress, Member AUSIMM) is the qualified person supervising this work and he commented:

Drill hole KD 001 is located in AGD Zone 66 at approximately 8972612m N and approximately 564488m E.

Moderate to strong zones of mineralised potassic (biotite-K feldspar) alteration were intersected from 135m to 487m depth in diorite porphyry with very minor comparatively equigranular diorite phases becoming more common from +490m.

A total mineralised width of 352m was noted, including two relatively barren propylitic (chlorite-epidote-calcite-magnetite) altered internal intervals of up to 50m width, towards the end of hole.

Both disseminated and vein pyrite-chalcopyrite +/- bornite mineralisation has been intersected, with veining becoming thicker and more abundant towards the lower end of the mineralised interval. Sulphide content varies and is locally dominated by chalcopyrite.

Elevated gold grades could be expected to accompany copper in the potassic altered zone. Trace molybdenite, galena and sphalerite have also been observed. Main vein types include quartz-calcite-chlorite +/- anhydrite- pyrite-chalcopyrite (+/- bornite). Common, vuggy, open space fill veins are representative of the epithermal event previously described in BHP reports.

The drill hole has extended mineralisation at depth by an estimated 150m from the base of previous drilling at 660m RL down to 510m RL. Indications are that KD 001 has passed through a steep NW dipping mineralised zone that remains open at depth. Mineralisation also remains open around the margins of a large circular composite intrusive complex, which includes the mineralised Kodu porphyry.

Drilling is continuing to test the depth extent of mineralisation and in the margins, in order to significantly increase the current inferred resource.

South Pacific Minerals Corp. is currently undertaking an aggressive exploration program at the Mt. Bini exploration license with a approximately 3,000m resource expansion and verification drilling program at the Kodu Deposit and sub-regional exploration to refine/ define additional targets to evaluate, trench and drill test.

The Kodu deposit has a current NI 43-101 Inferred Resource of 1.64 million ounces of gold and 750 million pounds of copper in 85Mt of 0.40% Cu + 0.60g/t Au. The porphyry copper /gold /molybdenum deposit is located approximately 50km NE of the capital of Port Moresby and is only partly drilled. The deposit remains open in all directions with grades generally increasing with depth and potentially continuing around the annulus of the composite intrusion.

South Pacific Minerals is at the forefront of mineral exploration in Papua New Guinea with an 85% interest in three porphyry copper /gold +/- molybdenum and epithermal /intrusive related gold exploration licenses and 7 EL applications covering a total area of approximately 10,000 sq kms. Most of these properties have advanced stage projects with significant known gold +/- copper in trench and drill hole, with additional drill ready targets that will be evaluated in due course.
