Southern Hemisphere Mining Limited: First Drill Hole at Las Santas Intersects Copper Porhyry Mineralization

TORONTO, CANADA--(Marketwire - Feb. 29, 2008) - Southern Hemisphere Mining Limited (TSX VENTURE:SH) ("Southern Hemisphere" or the "Company"), is pleased to announce that the first drill hole at its La Santas project has intersected copper mineralization confirming the expectation of a copper porphyry.

Exploration work at the company's Las Santas project, located in the Salamanca district of Region IV in central-northern Chile, commenced in January 2008 and has involved mapping, interpretation of surface induced polarization, resistivity and magnetic surveys and the commencement of a drilling program.

Reverse circulation drilling has confirmed the existence of a porphyry system within the project area. The first drill hole LSRC1 was drilled vertically and intersected copper sulphide porphyry mineralization from a depth of 26 meters to end of hole at 224meters when the hole was abandoned because of poor drilling conditions.

The lithology varies in composition but essentially has a quartz feldspar biotite composition with magnetite, chlorite and siliceous zones. Alteration includes secondary biotite, epidote and sericite. While the hole contains visible sulphides in its entirety, pyrite is dominant with lower order chalcopyrite, bornite and arsenopyrite. Selected intercepts include the following:

Analyses were completed by ALSChemex at the La Serena Laboratory, an accredited analytical facility. Check and duplicate sample analyses confirmed that results were within acceptable industry limits for precision and accuracy.

The geophysical target depth was 300m and preliminary interpretation suggests that based on the mineral assemblage visually identified, in the Company's opinion the hole may well have finished prematurely.

Additional drilling continues to further define the extent and definition of this mineralized porphyry at Las Santas.

Qualified Persons

Southern Hemisphere's exploration programmes are carried out under the supervision of the Company's VP Exploration, Mr. Russell D. Birrell M.Sc.
