Southern Silver Exploration Corp.: Pinabete Phase I Drilling Results Motivate IP Survey Followed by Phase II Drilling in Mid August

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 9, 2005) - Southern Silver Exploration Corp. (TSX VENTURE:SSV)(FWB:SEG) reported today that its first phase, 1948 metre, nine hole diamond drill program at the Pinabete carbonate replacement deposit (CRD) project near Chihuahua Mexico, has identified further potential for discovery of CRD/skarn, silver-lead-zinc mineralization in two separate areas of the large 4,649 ha property.

Thirty line-kilometers of Induced Polarization and Ground Magnetic geophysics are currently underway with diamond drilling to resume in mid-August. The geophysical program is designed to define the geometry of the high level massive sulphide lenses in the Pinabete zone as well as image deeper disseminated mineralization in both the Pinabete and El Papalote zones.

The 1,000 metre phase II program will focus on the skarn-altered margins of shallow intrusions in two discrete zones encountered to date as well as deeper tests of high-grade silver/zinc mineralization (DDH 05PB-08) in the El Papalote zone.

Southern Silver said the first phase program included seven holes that tested CRD style mineralization in the Pinabete zone and, 1.5 kilometres to the southeast, two holes that tested more widespread, fracture controlled, mineralization in the El Papalote area.

Intercepts of note include:

Southern Silver director, Dr. Thomas Patton, said, "the widespread alteration and mineralization on the property is indicative of a large hydrothermal system. The presence of near surface intrusive stocks in the Pinabete zone and multi-ounce silver mineralization in the El Papalote zone provide compelling targets for follow-up drill testing. We are seeing narrow higher grade zones within mineralized intervals of up to 42 metres wide and believe a significant intrusion has yet to be tested. The IP program is not only a useful tool in defining the geometry and distribution of the host structures, but may also assist in identifying new buried targets on the property."
