Space-Time Insight Adds Renewable Energy Analytics to the EWE enera Project

Real-Time Visual Analytics Enables Next Big Step Towards Germany's Goal of 45 Percent Renewable Energy by 2030

SAN MATEO, CA--(Marketwired - Jul 15, 2015) - Space‐Time Insight, the leading provider of situational intelligence solutions, has joined the enera project from EWE aimed at increasing the integration of distributed and renewable energy sources across EWE's service territory in northwest Germany. EWE has applied for project funding from the German Ministry for Economics. The project will encompass EUR 200 million in funding and investments from the project partners.

One of the largest utility companies in Germany, EWE provides about 1.3 million customers with electricity and 1.7 million customers with natural gas. EWE has also been a leader in renewable energy for more than 30 years. Germany has a goal of 45 percent renewable energy by 2030 and 80 percent by 2050. Currently, renewable energy accounts for approximately 28 percent of the country's consumption.

The enera project seeks to speed EWE and Germany's transition to a smart grid that encompasses new technologies, new market mechanisms and a more consistent, transparent energy information system. These innovations will, in part, increase the integration of small-scale, local renewable energy sources into the wider grid. The EWE service territory generates 70 percent more energy than it consumes thanks to renewable resources such as wind energy and biogas.

"You can reduce the use of conventional power plants for grid stability only if you are fully aware of reliable, forecasted local renewables," says Christian Arnold, Managing Director for the enera project. "Space-Time Insight's customers already incorporate renewable integration into an advanced smart grid, for example in Sacramento, California. This inspired us to pursue renewable energy analytics for our enera project."

Space-Time Insight offers real-time visual analytics applications that correlate data from multiple, disparate data sources to solve complex challenges such as optimising capital investments, reducing outages and improving regulatory compliance. As part of the enera project, Space-Time Insight will help EWE identify and capitalise on near-term opportunities for renewables integration, as well as establish analytical and visualisation capabilities across the Smart Grid and Smart Markets.

"We're honored to work with EWE on a project as innovative as enera," said Mike Lewis, General Manager for Space-Time Insight in Europe. "Reliable and widespread renewable energy is a key economic and environmental challenge that offers many benefits. We're confident that, working together on enera, we can make a huge difference for customers and businesses in northwest Germany and beyond."
