Spare a Thought for Indesit Workers This Christmas

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Dec. 20, 2007) - Hundreds of workers in Stoke on Trent will be left jobless today (Friday 21st Dec) as another manufacturing site moves its production to Poland.

Indesit cooker plant at Blythe Bridge will finally close its doors leaving hundreds of employees out of work just before Christmas. 620 employees are being made redundant due to the company moving production to Lodz in Poland.

Indesit, whose biggest rival Electrolux moved to Poland last week, will continue to service the UK cooker market from Poland. It is the largest supplier in the country with 40% of the UK market.

Mick Stevens, Unite Regional Officer said:

"This will be a very sad day for Stoke on Trent as yet another company shamelessly dumps British employees in favour of low wage exploitation in Poland.

Since the initial announcement back in May absence has been zero. The workforce have been a credit to themselves and can walk away with their heads held high."

Ten years ago Stoke on Trent was renowned for its world famous Pottery Industry but like Steel production and now Manufacturing all production has moved abroad. The only work available in the area now is Retail and Distribution.

Gareth Brunt, former convener and employee since 1976 says:

"The area is now very deprived which makes it extremely difficult to find work. I will be competing against my former colleagues for minimum wage agency work and will be forced to sign on come January 2nd."

Unite believes that Manufacturing is crucial to the future prosperity of the UK. The union have been asking government to provide stronger protection for employees facing redundancy and urging the government to acknowledge the important and unique role that manufacturing plays in the UK and global economy, and as such show the industry the support, respect and encouragement it deserves.
