Special Investigations Unit-Posting of News Releases

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 13, 2011) - As of January 1, 2012, Special Investigations Unit (SIU) news releases will be posted exclusively to the Media Centre section of the SIU website. In order to ensure you receive SIU news releases, please sign up for one of the two following options by going to http://www.siu.on.ca/en/media_centre.php:

  1. Email Alerts: Get SIU news sent directly to your inbox.

  2. RSS Feed: With RSS feeds, you no longer have to check websites one by one to see if they have been updated with new content - all of your news is sent to one convenient location. The information can be collected through a web-based reader or through desktop software. Instructions can be found on the SIU website.

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
