Spectra Energy Transmission Provides Training for Immigrant Engineers

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - Feb. 22, 2007) - Spectra Energy is one of the corporate partners working with British Columbia's Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources to provide training programs in schools and colleges across British Columbia (BC) that will benefit a diverse group of students. Spectra Energy is contributing $60,000 and collectively, all the partners involved will contribute $1 million toward these programs.

The Education and Training Initiative - a partnership between the province and industry - is a result of three years of collaboration that helps promote job opportunities in the oil and gas sector.

Spectra Energy's involvement consists of a partnership with the BC Government and the S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Training Institute (STI) to provide funds and resources to the Immigrant Engineering Orientation Program. This program provides internationally-trained engineers with the skills and training required for a successful career in BC's oil and gas industry. In turn, the program will help address the skill shortage for engineers in northern BC where the remoteness of the oil and gas operations tends to create additional recruitment challenges.

"We are pleased to be able to partner with both government and education providers to fill what is a very real industry need and to provide immigrant professionals with a chance to explore work opportunities outside of the Lower Mainland," said Danny Strilchuck, Manager of diversity and employment equity for Spectra Energy Transmission. "Students receive hands-on experience as an engineer in the oil and gas industry in BC and add Canadian experience to their resumes."

The Immigrant Engineering Orientation Program is a 16-week pilot program that will help to provide immigrants from the Lower Mainland with skills they need to adapt to the Canadian working environment. The first 10 weeks are spent in a classroom format at the STI. The final six weeks will be spent on location at Spectra Energy, where participants will gain relevant, Canadian work experience from Spectra Energy employees and develop personal networks and an understanding of the Canadian gas industry in general.
