Spectrum's SDR-4000 to Support the Inmarsat BGAN Waveform from GateHouse

Enables software reconfigurable multi-standard Inmarsat BGAN satellite terminals and gateways based on a common hardware platform

BURNABY, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - July 22, 2009) - Spectrum Signal Processing by Vecima ("Spectrum") (TSX:VCM), an advanced communications equipment supplier, announced today that GateHouse Communications, a leader in satellite communications software, has selected Spectrum's flexComm™ SDR-4000 software defined radio (SDR) transceiver platform to port their Inmarsat Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) SDR waveform. Inmarsat BGAN provides both commercial and military users with access to a reliable and mature global satellite communications network. Inmarsat BGAN can be found on land-portable, aeronautical, maritime, and vehicular products to provide broadband connectivity while on the move and in remote areas.

"The combination of a software reconfigurable hardware, like the SDR-4000 platform, with the Inmarsat BGAN SDR waveform opens up possibilities for a new type of satellite terminal and gateway that is capable of supporting multiple satellite and terrestrial waveform standards," said Pia Ankerstjerne, Vice President of GateHouse USA. "Spectrum offers a complete hardware and software solution for software reconfigurable satellite terminal and gateway development. Spectrum's SDR-4000 platform has achieved widespread adoption given its proven ability to support a variety of commercial and military-grade waveforms."

"Spectrum continues its ongoing thrust to offer complete turn-key radio solutions for both commercial and military markets. We have accomplished this by partnering with trusted, industry-leading software companies such as GateHouse," said Mark Briggs, Vice President of Business Development at Spectrum. "By leveraging our portfolio of core radio technologies and services, Spectrum can offer terminal and gateway manufacturers complete solutions that decrease their time-to-market, lower development costs, and reduce the overall cost of ownership through hardware and software reuse."

The SDR-4000 has been proven to support implementations of military waveforms, including some under the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) program, and public safety waveforms such as:

- Wideband Networking Waveform (WNW) Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) mode

- Soldier Radio Waveform (SRW) Electronic Warfare (EW) mode

- Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio System (SINCGARS)

- Future Multiband Multiwaveform Modular Tactical Radio (FM3TR)

- APCO Project 25 (P25)

About SDR-4000

The SDR-4000 is a multi-purpose software reconfigurable transceiver that combines heterogeneous processing including digital signal processors (DSP), general purpose processors (GPP) and field programmable gate arrays (FPGA). The SDR-4000 is packaged in a small 3U CompactPCI® form-factor and is available in air-cooled packages for benign environments or conduction-cooled packages for deployments in harsh environments. The SDR-4000 is available with a real-time operating system, hardware abstraction layer, and Communications Research Centre Canada (CRC) SCARI Software Suite, a complete development environment for the SCA. About Inmarsat BGAN

Inmarsat Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) is a 3G satellite communications system, operated by Inmarsat LLC. The system is served by three geo-stationary satellites and supports circuit and packet switched services with data rates up to 492 kbps bi-directionally. Most terminal manufacturers use GateHouse Inmarsat BGAN software for land-portable, aeronautical, maritime, and vehicular products. The Inmarsat BGAN SDR Waveform software being ported on to the SDR-4000 will support all UE (User Equipment) classes and includes the FPGA, DSP, and the GPP components of both the physical and protocol layer of the waveform.
