Speek Lends a Voice to Support the Summer of Smart

Open, Voice API Developers to Sponsor Urban Innovation's Hackathon Event

ARLINGTON, VA and SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - Jul 20, 2011) - Speek, developers of a web-based Voice API that dials out to cell phones, landlines and VOIP applications to connect to any platform, today announced its sponsorship of The Summer of Smart, the second Urban Innovation weekend centered on Sustainability, Transportation, and Energy in San Francisco. The event will be held July 22-24 at the Gray Area Foundation for the Arts building. Speek's open Voice API will be available to all attendees along with the support of its development team.

"With a shared interest in keeping software open to foster its development, The Summer of Smart is a natural fit for us," said Andrew Powers, CEO and chief monkey at Speek. "Opening up software to talented developers, and giving them the opportunity to be as creative as they can, enhances the possibilities of technology and creating applications with the potential to change the city and improve urban life as we know it."

The Summer of Smart is an intensive, four-month experiment in urban innovation -- the new Summer of Love. Over the course of this summer, urbanists of many disciplines -- developers, designers, planners, journalists, civic leaders, community activists, and more -- will come together to address the most pressing issues facing cities today. In the end, the leading projects will be publicly presented to candidates in the San Francisco mayoral race, along with an esteemed panel of experts, to generate a meaningful dialogue around the potential of new tools to create lasting change.

Summer of Smart is an initiative of Gray Area Foundation for the Arts, one of the nation's leading organizations dedicated to furthering the use and advancement of creative technology for social good. GAFFTA brings together the best creative coders, data artists, designers and makers to create experiments that build social consciousness through digital culture.
