The country's capitals will shine during the holiday season

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Dec. 7, 2016) - Department of Canadian Heritage

For the 32nd year, the magic of Christmas Lights Across Canada will take over the provincial and territorial capitals and warm the hearts of visitors from coast to coast. People of all ages are invited to take in the splendour of the enchanting scenery surrounding the legislative buildings across Canada.

Today, in Canada's Capital Region, the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage, will host an illumination ceremony at 7 p.m. on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. Spectators will delight in highlights from the musical show Décembre performed by Québec Issime, a pyrotechnics show and interactive colourful prisms. For the first time, the ceremony will be broadcast live on Facebook. Don't miss it!

The capitals on Canada's east and west coasts-St. John's and Victoria-will hold their illumination ceremonies tomorrow, December 8. In St. John's, the party will start at 6:00 p.m. on Confederation Hill, where nearly 60,000 lights will be lit. In Victoria, the ceremony will take place at 6:00 p.m. on the steps of the Parliament Building. A giant Christmas tree will be lit, and guests will then be invited to head indoors to enjoy hot chocolate and cookies while listening to the Reynold Secondary School Carol Band perform classic holiday tunes.

While these three capital cities are holding their illumination ceremonies in the next few hours, the others are already buzzing with holiday festivities. In Halifax, Charlottetown, Fredericton, Québec City, Toronto, Winnipeg, Regina, Edmonton, Yellowknife, Whitehorse and Iqaluit, hundreds of thousands lights have been shining since late November.

Quotes

"These celebrations are a wonderful way to get together with family and friends to welcome winter and mark the beginning of the holiday season. On the eve of the 150th anniversary of Confederation, let's take a moment to observe the hundreds of thousands of lights that unite Canadians from one end of the country to the other."
