Spring to Coastal Alabama for Numerous Nationally-Known Events and More

An Abundance of Family-Friendly Events Will Take Place in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Ala. Through May, Including The Color Run, Mullet Toss and Hangout Music Festival

GULF SHORES, AL and ORANGE BEACH, AL--(Marketwired - February 05, 2014) - As spring fever sets in, Alabama's Gulf Coast will welcome a variety of family-friendly events from athletic competitions and boat shows to music, food and art festivals to satisfy visitor interests. Check out the following major events occurring from March through May 2014 along Alabama's 32 miles of white-sand beaches.

Get in touch with your inner artist at the Orange Beach Festival of Art. Held at the Coastal Arts Center at Orange Beach and Waterfront Park from March 8-9, festival goers will have the opportunity to celebrate visual, performing, music and culinary arts with more than 90 artists' work on display. This free festival will also include the Kid's Art Alley, live music and a culinary arts court showcasing local food. The Wharf's C-Spire Wireless Concert Series -- which features performances in a 10,000-seat outdoor amphitheater in Orange Beach -- kicks off with back-to-back concerts on March 14 and 15 with Jason Aldean and special guests Florida Georgia Line and Tyler Farr. Tickets for the 2014 Night Train Tour range from $59.75 to $73.10. Due to popular demand, limited tickets are available. This concert serves as the kick-off for Concerts at the Coast, a Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Tourism initiative to showcase the area's caliber of live music performances throughout the year along Alabama's beaches. The Wharf Boat and Yacht Show will take place from March 27-30 featuring more than $90 million in boats and marine products, including more than 125 wet slip boats and yachts and 250 trailerable boats on land. Other highlights include children's art classes led by a marine artist, a fashion show, exhibitor displays, seminars, live music and a special invitation only Thursday night event. Celebrate wellness by participating in The Color Run at The Wharf in Orange Beach on April 5. Deemed the "happiest 5K on the planet," The Color Run douses participants with colored cornstarch throughout this untimed event, creating a colorfully fun environment for individuals of any fitness level. Avid birders will not want to miss the Hummer Bird Study Group's spring bird banding session from April 5-13 at Fort Morgan State Historic Site. Alabama's Gulf Coast serves as a critical stopover point for migratory birds, and one of the hotspots for viewing various bird species is at Fort Morgan State Historic Site. The birding group mans two bird banding stations that open before dawn each day and close each afternoon, depending on the flow of birds. Birders are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, binoculars and a birding field guide to view and explore the spectacular wildlife. No pets are allowed; parking is limited and fees apply. Step back in time during Fort Morgan State Historic Site's 7th Annual Confederate Garrison Living History Day on April 12. Confederate historians, re-enactors and history buffs will gather for the continuation of the site's commemoration of the Civil War 150th anniversary as re-enactors portray the life of the garrison during the spring of 1864. Join Flora-Bama for the 18th Annual Mullet Man Triathlon on April 19. The triathlon consists of a 1/4-mile swim in the Gulf of Mexico, 17-mile bike segment and 4-mile run. Race divisions, separated into age categories of 39 and under and 40 and up, are as follows according to weigh-in at registration packet pick-up: Athena division for women weighing 145 pounds or more; Clydesdale division for men weighing 200 pounds or more; Super Clydesdale division for men weighing 225 pounds or more; Fat Tire division for men and women riding a Fat Tire or mountain bike; and First Timers division for men and women who are first time triathletes. Race to the Gulf Shores Sportsplex for the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships from April 25-26. The SSAC is comprised of schools and universities in Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and Tennessee and is a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) division I conference. The 5th Annual Bama Coast Cruise, presented by O'Reilly Auto Parts, will take place at the Orange Beach Events Center at The Wharf from April 25-26. This free event will showcase beautifully restored classic cars along with a parade cruise, various exhibitors and vendors, door prizes, cash drawings and much more throughout the weekend. The legendary Interstate Mullet Toss and Gulf Coast's Greatest Beach Party celebrates 30 years of fish flying through the air from April 25-27 at the Flora-Bama. With celebrity tossers at noon daily, the competition generates many good laughs for a good cause. A portion of the proceeds from each fish tossed will be donated to area youth charities, including a local Community Drug & Alcohol Council, Inc. program. Serving up highly competitive action, the top female student-athletes from across the country will hit the white-sand courts at Gulf Shores Public Beach from May 2-4 for the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championships. Camera crews from CBS Sports will be on hand to televise the action, which is free for spectators to witness first-hand. Hundreds of junior teams are also set to compete.
