SpringSource Launches Enterprise Bundle Repository for OSGi

More Than 400 Enterprise Open Source Libraries Packaged Together to Enable Easy OSGi Deployment

SAN MATEO, CA--(Marketwire - October 16, 2008) - SpringSource, the company behind Spring, the de facto standard in enterprise Java, and a leading provider of infrastructure software, today announced the SpringSource Enterprise Bundle Repository. The Repository contains more than 400 of the most popular enterprise open source Java libraries made available for general use in an OSGi-ready format.

The SpringSource Enterprise Bundle Repository packages together complete artifacts that are ready to be deployed in an OSGi environment, such as the SpringSource dm Server. The dm Server unleashes the inherent power of modularization made available through Spring and OSGi to provide, for the first time, a simplified and more practical approach to building modular enterprise applications using OSGi.

Before the dm Server and Enterprise Bundle Repository, programmers struggled while analyzing non-OSGi ready artifacts, tracing their dependencies on other libraries, writing OSGi metadata and debugging esoteric compatibility issues. SpringSource's repository, however, ensures that developers have immediate access to complete OSGi-ready libraries that they can trust, freeing them from searching for third-party code.

"I am very impressed by the SpringSource Enterprise Bundle Repository," said Peter Kriens, OSGi Alliance technical director. "It removes one of the primary barriers to widespread adoption of OSGi: the easy use of existing open source library code."

In order to protect the quality of published artifacts, SpringSource applies a strict governance model to the repository content. The full governance model ensures that all metadata is correct and consistent throughout the repository and required artifact dependencies are satisfied. In comparison, other repositories do not ensure that existing artifacts have dependencies present and verified.

"The SpringSource Enterprise Bundle Repository is a powerful collection of OSGi-ready open source libraries commonly used for developing enterprise Java applications," said Adrian Colyer, chief technology officer for SpringSource. "Every jar file in the repository is a valid OSGi bundle containing full version information. SpringSource's high standards of completeness and consistency are guaranteed throughout this one-of-a-kind repository."

The artifacts in the repository are fully accessible to anyone via a web interface and the popular Maven and Ivy build tools. Access to the repository is also integrated into the SpringSource Tool Suite, making it easy to pull down bundle dependencies for applications running on the SpringSource dm Server.
