SST Launches ShotSpotter SiteSecure(TM) to Thwart Attacks on Critical Infrastructure and Accelerate Real-Time Response

Solution Offers First 360-Degree Protection and Security for Electric Substations and Transportation Hubs

NEWARK, CA--(Marketwired - Sep 10, 2014) - SST, Inc., the maker of ShotSpotter Flex™ and the global leader in gunfire detection and analysis, today extended its proven technology and service offerings with the launch of ShotSpotter SiteSecure for Critical Infrastructure, created to meet the unique protection needs of large, strategic, critical facilities. ShotSpotter SiteSecure for Critical Infrastructure is a reliable and cost-effective security solution designed to detect gunfire and explosive attacks on energy substations, bulk electrical power grids, airports and other large outdoor structures. Employing the industry's only 360-degree detection system, ShotSpotter SiteSecure for Critical Infrastructure offers a wide area of security coverage, as opposed to point solution that can only detect triggers directly in front of them. ShotSpotter SiteSecure with "reviewed alerts" provides an instant alert service 24 hours, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Securing Critical Infrastructure with Unmatched Threat Detection
ShotSpotter SiteSecure for Critical Infrastructure is an unprecedented gunfire detection system designed to protect and secure any substation or power-related facility in the event of an active shooter attack or explosive attack. Due to their remote area locations, electrical substations are particularly vulnerable to attacks because they are typically not overseen by local law enforcement. Organizations using SiteSecure benefit from complete 360-degree detection capabilities including:

  • Early Threat Detection
  • Ongoing gunshot location alerts
  • Enhanced tactical response
  • Wide-area protection capable of pinpointing gunfire up to 500 meters away

"Last year's Metcalf breach was an important teaching moment for us: simple non-integrated security point solutions -- and those that focus exclusively on cyber attacks -- leave us vulnerable to potential breaches and compromise security of our critical infrastructure," said Ralph A. Clark, CEO of SST. "The industry needs layered security solutions to protect physical assets. Wide area acoustic gunshot detection and alerting must be a part of any comprehensive security and surveillance program designed to protect our strategic critical infrastructure."

Regulatory Spotlight Now Shines on Physical Security
On March 7, 2014, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) took action to provide for the resilience of the transmission grid by directing the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) to develop reliability standards requiring owners and operators of the Bulk-Power System to address risks due to physical security threats and vulnerabilities. The order, intended to enhance the grid's resilience by requiring physical security for these facilities, will complement the ongoing efforts of FERC and facility owners to ensure the physical security of the grid.

Deploying ShotSpotter SiteSecure
SiteSecure integrates easily with any facility's comprehensive security platform and operates remotely through a managed, cloud-based system with which SST provides system performance oversight and reviewed alerts. SiteSecure instantly detects incoming gunfire and immediately notifies those who need to respond, such as security operations center personnel and local law enforcement.

ShotSpotter SiteSecure Key Functionality:

  • Detection of a full-spectrum of potential threats - including both subsonic and supersonic rounds, as well as explosive attacks.
  • Precise Location and Pinpoint Data - Gunfire detection up to 500 meters away and full wide-area 360-degree protection anywhere within the coverage area such that bullets need not pass directly in front of the sensors to trigger an alert.
  • Detailed Fully Contextualized Alerts - including number of rounds fired, the GPS location of the shooters, streaming audio files of the event to designated recipients in the organization's security operations center.
  • Collaborative Sensor Approach - Offering high reliability, with no single point of failure, and more accuracy for incident analysis.
  • Managed, Cloud-Based System - Providing cost-effective, no on-site server or customer IT support.
  • Easily integrated into existing security platforms enabling alerts to populate anywhere as well as trigger appropriate counter measures
