St. Albert Transit Embraces New Technology as It Grows Into a Key Regional Transportation Link in Alberta, in Business Review Canada

SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwire - May 17, 2012) - In a report in Business Review Canada, steps taken by innovative City of St. Albert, AB public transpiration overseer St. Albert Transit (StAT) to enhance its services are chronicled.

To that end, StAT publicly launched its Google Transit Trip Planner on March 21 that allows customers to plan a transit trip in seconds. Additionally, StAT's NextBus real-time passenger information system developed by WebTech Wireless, rolled out in May 2011, predicts arrival times based on a vehicle's actual GPS location.

"We now have a lot of smart systems with which we're providing information. We have GPS units on all of our buses. From an operations perspective, that allows us to react to situations. With NextBus, we spent a lot of time cleaning up background information regarding routes and stops so passengers now have real-time information," says Transit Director Bob McDonald, a transit industry veteran of more than 30 years who came on board with StAT three years ago.

The City of St. Albert is northwest of the provincial capital of Edmonton and served approximately 1.25 million riders in 2011.
