St. Andrew's-Wesley Homelessness and Mental Health Action Group: "Everyone Needs a Place to call Home" Vancouver Mayoral Candidates Debate

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Oct. 16, 2008) - How will they deal with homelessness and the mental health crisis on our streets? Or addiction treatment and affordable housing? These will be the focal points of an upcoming, free public debate between Peter Ladner and Gregor Robertson - the two leading candidates for Mayor in Vancouver's civic election next month.

The debate will be held at St. Andrew's-Wesley United Church (Burrard and Nelson, Vancouver) on Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; debate begins at 7 p.m.

Both candidates have stated that dealing with homelessness is one of the city's most pressing issues and a top priority. This particular public debate will focus strictly on homelessness, affordable housing, mental health/addiction treatment issues. It is designed to show where each candidate stands, how they differ, and if elected, how they propose to deal with these critical issues.

The moderator will be Ric Matthews, Minister of First United Church Mission in Vancouver's downtown eastside. First United has a long tradition of serving those who suffer from homelessness, addictions, mental illness and other medical conditions who might otherwise not survive.

The panel posing the questions to the candidates includes; Frances Bula, a city columnist and a contributing editor with Vancouver Magazine; Monte Paulsen, investigative reporter for The Tyee and a regular contributor to Vancouver's 24 Hours; and Dr. Nancy Hall: a healthcare consultant and B.C.'s former Mental Health Advocate.

This debate is being sponsored by The Tyee (www.thetyee.ca) and 24 Hours (www.vancouver.24hrs.ca) and is open to all members of the public at no charge. It is being hosted by the St. Andrew's-Wesley Homelessness and Mental Health Action Group (www.endhomelessnessnow.ca).
