St. Anthony's Kicks Off Annual Curbside Donation Drive: Organizers' Goal Is to Collect 1,000 Turkeys Before Thanksgiving

St. Anthony's kicks off its annual Curbside Donation Drive Saturday, 11/23 at 9 AM. Their goal is to collect 1,000 turkeys. With T minus 6 days before Thanksgiving, organizers of the drive have faith that residents around the Bay Area will drive to the occasion by dropping off much needed donations. St. Anthony's also needs canned goods for their pantry serving seniors and families.

Volunteers clad in red jackets will be at the ready to greet drivers outside of St. Anthony's Dining Room. For more information, go to

"St. Anthony's isn't just counting turkeys," says Executive Director Barry Stenger, "We're counting on raising 2/3 of our annual operating budget. This is a crucial time for us to channel San Francisco's world renowned generosity so that we can meet the needs of people who turn to us every day of the year."

With all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, Stenger believes that San Franciscans will reconnect with the most sacred meaning of the holiday season; celebrating the inherent dignity of all people.

Anticipating a record number of diners, chefs at St. Anthony's are prepared to dish out 4,000 meals on Thanksgiving Day. St. Anthony's -- best known for serving up hope and nearly 40 million meals to people in need over the last 6 decades -- faces the daunting challenge of keeping pace with a growing number of people struggling to meet their basic needs. Low-income residents of the Bay Area face a one-two punch as they scramble to keep up with sky-rocketing rents and simultaneous cuts in basic services.

Several alarming trends point towards a further erosion of safety net services:

  • According to a recent study released by the San Francisco Food Security Taskforce, 19,000 rental units in San Francisco lack basic access to kitchen facilities.
  • Recipients of Cal Fresh (food stamp benefits) are reeling from recent cuts that result in the loss of twenty-one meals a month for a family of four.
  • The number of families coming to St. Anthony's for clothes has jumped by 60% from 2012 to 2013, most likely as a response to the cost of sky-rocketing rent.

For more than 60 years, St. Anthony's has offered a gateway out of poverty through a network of life-sustaining services.
