Award of Merit

US Gold Chairman and CEO Rob McEwen, and his wife Cheryl McEwen will be presented with the St. George's Society's prestigious Award of Merit for community service at the Red Rose Ball on Thursday, April 26th at Toronto's Four Seasons Hotel.

The St. George's Society's 10th annual gala will honour the McEwens, generous philanthropists, who founded the McEwen Centre for Regenerative Medicine with a $10-million donation to Toronto's University Health Network. The McEwens have made an additional recent contribution of $10 million for a total of $20 million to regenerative medicine and stem cell research. Together, they will be recognized for their outstanding contributions to the community.

With more than 400 guests and corporate sponsors, the Red Rose Ball will raise over $500,000 to benefit the McEwen Centre and the St. George's Society's charitable trust fund - more than a hundred fold increase since the Ball began raising funds in 1996.

St. George is the patron saint of England. Toronto's St. George's Society has celebrated St. George's Day (April 23) in ways that have reflected the changing city since the mid-19th century - from the "thousand-man dinners" where the Prime Minister addressed the rich and powerful, to today's fundraiser for Toronto charities.

Next year marks the 150th anniversary of the incorporation of Toronto's St. George's Society, which has been committed from the beginning to "benevolent work for English immigrants, the poor and other needy persons."

Founder and former chairman of Goldcorp Inc., Rob McEwen is Chairman and CEO of US Gold and Lexam Explorations. His numerous awards include Ernst and Young's Entrepreneur of the Year and Canadian Business Magazine's Most Innovative CEO. With his wife Cheryl, they focus their community support on encouraging excellence in health care and education.

The McEwen Centre for Regenerative Medicine is a world leader in the emerging field of regenerative medicine that aims to harness the power of stem cells to repair or replace damaged tissues and organs, transforming patient care and offering great promise to treat diseases where there is limited, or no treatments.
