St. John Dentist Provides New Information About Gum Disease

ST. JOHN, IN--(Marketwired - September 23, 2015) - A St. John cosmetic dentist with more than 20 years of dental experience is now providing each of his patients with information about the connection between periodontal disease and heart disease.

Periodontal disease, better known as gum disease, will affect about 75 percent of Americans and has been linked to serious illnesses like heart disease and diabetes. Researchers recently discovered that the same type of inflammation that causes gum disease is also present in heart disease.

“With this recent discovery about gum disease, your oral health care is more important than ever,” said Dr. Scott Kapers, owner of Creating Smiles in St. John and Valparaiso. “Gum disease is a serious issue that can lead to rampant tooth loss, but patients also need to understand that gum disease can affect the rest of their body and create life-threatening problems.”

Dr. Kapers offers regular cleanings and gum disease treatment to effectively remove plaque and protect the health of his patients’ teeth and gums. Patients with gum disease often have swollen or tender gums and experience bleeding in their gums, but it’s possible to have gum disease and have no physical signs, Dr. Kapers said.

For patients with gum disease, Creating Smiles offers scaling and root planing, which is a process of removing the infection from the gums. The bacteria that causes gum disease can multiply and reproduce in just 90 days, so Dr. Kapers recommends that patients with gum disease visit a dentist once every three to four months.

“Gum disease is one of scariest things we deal with in dentistry and it can take over the mouth in a hurry,” Dr. Kapers said. “By having our patients maintain their regular dental checkups and examinations, we can keep their mouths healthy and beautiful for a lifetime.”

Creating Smiles is a two-office practice that provides comprehensive dental services to children and adult patients. Dr. Kapers focuses on sedation dentistry and implant dentistry. He provides dental implants to stabilize dentures and to replace individual missing teeth. Most of Dr. Kapers’ dedicated staff have been with him for more than 15 years.

Dr. Kapers earned his dental degree from Indiana University School of Dentistry. He started Creating Smiles in 1993 and has completed hundreds of hours in continuing education. He offers comprehensive dentistry services, including dental implants and sedation options for fearful patients or those who need multiple dental treatments. Dr. Kapers received training in Botox and dermal fillers from the American Academy of Facial Esthetics and the International Congress of Oral Implantologists for dental implants.

Dr. Kapers’ associate, Dr. Joseph Ornelas, also earned his dental degree from Indiana University School of Dentistry. Dr. Ornelas, a Crown Point native, received his bachelor of science degree from Purdue University.

The Creating Smiles St. John location, 8217 Wicker Ave., is open from Monday through Saturday. The Valparaiso location, 2262 Morthland Drive, is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
