St. Lawrence Cement Mississauga Plant celebrates Cement Industry Environment and Energy Awards

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - July 5, 2005) - At a ceremony held today at the Mississauga cement plant, the senior management of St. Lawrence Cement (TSX:ST.SV.A), community representatives and government officials joined the 200 plant employees to celebrate a special achievement. The Mississauga plant won top honours in two categories of the 4th Annual Cement Industry Environment and Energy Awards sponsored by the Portland Cement Association (PCA), the Cement Association of Canada (CAC) and Cement Americas Magazine.

Among the guests of honour who attended were Hazel McCallion, Mayor of Mississauga, Patricia Mullin, Ward 2 Councillor, for Mississauga, representatives of the Ministry of Environment of Ontario, Bradley Museum, Canadian Peregrine Foundation, Cement Association of Canada and Cement Americas Magazine.

The plant received two awards - Overall Environmental Excellence and Environmental Performance - for its ISO 14001 Environmental Management System, its control and reduction of emissions, its waste minimization and reduction of natural resource consumption, its recognition from the community and its high level of employee environmental awareness.

The Annual Cement Industry Environment and Energy Awards aim at recognizing cement producers for innovative practices, programs and projects throughout Canada, the United States and Mexico. The Mississauga plant's environmental excellence was also recognized in 2002 with three awards.

Philippe Arto, President and CEO of St. Lawrence Cement, attended the ceremony and congratulated all employees for this outstanding achievement. "In recent years, we have invested substantially to improve our overall environmental performance and it is extremely gratifying to see that we are improving continuously. We believe that an excellent environmental track record is vital to maintain a sustained partnership with the communities in which we operate. These environmental awards reflect our commitment towards sustainable development and the dedication of our employees. I thank them all for making it happen," stated Mr. Arto.
