St. Louis Cosmetic Dentist Uses Digital Photography to Enhance Patient Care

EUREKA, MO--(Marketwire - Nov 14, 2012) - As the tools and technology of cosmetic dentistry advance, the level of care and quality of results dentists are able to provide their patients progresses as well. In an effort to provide the highest level of patient care possible, Dr. Jack Griffin, Jr. has implemented digital photography into his St. Louis cosmetic dentistry practice. Regarding the state-of-the-art technology in relation to its use among dentists, Dr. Griffin says, "Excellent digital photography may be the single most important tool needed to improve our cosmetic results and refine our skills. Great photos should be routinely used to plan, prepare, evaluate, and correct our cosmetic cases."

The St. Louis cosmetic dentist believes digital photography can enhance the level of care he provides each patient during his or her actual treatment: "Patient position, lighting, operator fatigue, eye accommodation, and other factors make accurate restoration evaluations almost impossible at the time of treatment. If the goal is to complete the work in a single appointment without a follow-up visit, [dentists can] take the images, load them onto a computer, and evaluate them before the patient leaves. Digital photography provides a mechanism to look at clinical treatment independent of operatory limitations while adding the huge benefit of tooth image enlargement."

Concerning the quality of digital images compared to other film, Dr. Griffin says: "The digital single lens reflex (DSLR) systems are clearly superior to their compact brethren, and now rival the quality that comes from 35mm film cameras. Images taken using 35mm film can provide the ultimate in quality but require development, enlargement, or slide projection to equal the size enhancement easily achieved with digital images displayed on monitors that most offices now have."

From routine check-ups to color-matching for composite and porcelain veneers, Dr. Griffin believes digital imaging can greatly enhance each patient's cosmetic results. Although humbling to see his work enlarged and projected onto megascreens, he says displaying blown-up images on his monitor is necessary in order to achieve every individual's aesthetic goals. No matter what technologies are offered, the St. Louis dentist also adds that patients should always take the time to research their dentist to ensure he or she is qualified to provide the safest, most effective treatments and procedures.
