At 11 a.m. this morning, a few courageous Standard Life employees will participate in the Shaved Head Challenge to raise money for the annual Step Up for the Children with Standard Life campaign to benefit the Foundation of Stars. The event will take place in the main hall of the Maison Standard Life, located at 1245 Sherbrooke Street West in Montreal.

To take part in the challenge and to have the privilege of having their heads shaved, all participants must raise a minimum amount of $500 each. To protect all those freshly shaved heads, child spokesperson Valerie Bernier will present each participant with a Montreal Canadiens cap signed by the campaign ambassador, defenceman Francis Bouillon.

Last year, over $30,000 was raised through the Shaved Head Challenge. External Communications and Public Affairs VP Vincenzo Ciampi explains why he decided to participate in the event this year: "Our objective is to raise $400,000 before the annual grand family day celebration on June 14 at Parc Jean-Drapeau-that's why we all need to get involved."

There's still time to register.

Francis Bouillon invites the public to team up with him during the Step Up for the Children with Standard Life day, to take place on Jun 14, 2008, at Parc Jean-Drapeau. On the menu: a 10 km run, a 5 km walk and a host of activities for the young and the young-at-heart. To register, raise money or make a donation, simply visit www.standardlife.ca/grandspas or call 514-759-7565.

Eleven-year-old Valerie Bernier will accompany Francis Bouillon. Valerie is currently battling osteosarcoma, a form of cancer, which led to the partial amputation of one of her legs. "On June 14, 2008, I will participate in the 5 km walk with my mother and I hope a lot of other children and families will join us," said Valerie.

Where do the donations go?

Standard Life will absorb all the costs related to the campaign and is counting on the support of sponsors. The money raised by individuals, teams and companies will be donated to the Foundation of Stars, the largest source of non-government funding for children's health research in Quebec. The Foundation supports research into children's diseases at the Centre hospitalier universitaire Sainte-Justine, the Montreal Children's Hospital, the Centre hospitalier universitaire de Quebec and the Centre hospitalier universitaire de Sherbrooke.
