Stantec celebrates annual Stantec in the Community Day

Design firm sees over 5,500 employee volunteers in action around the world

EDMONTON, ALBERTA and NEW YORK, NEW YORK--(Marketwired - Sept. 15, 2014) - Stantec (TSX:STN) (NYSE:STN) celebrates its annual Stantec in the Community Day on September 15, a day of worldwide community service across the design firm.

More than 5,500 Stantec employees will volunteer at community organizations in Canada, the United States, Barbados, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, and India. Stantec in the Community Day is in addition to the many community outreach activities Stantec employees participate in throughout the year.

"We're inspired by the communities we live in and the impact our work has on them," says Stantec president and chief executive officer, Bob Gomes. "This day of volunteering not only further supports Stantec's commitment to community, but it also brings our team members together to make a coordinated, local impact."

Examples of Stantec in the Community Day events around the world include

  • In Columbus, Ohio, 18 Stantec team members will volunteer at the Children's Hunger Alliance, leading students in physical fitness activities as part of the organization's goal to educate children about making healthy food choices and engaging in physical activity.
  • In Sarasota, Florida, 50 team members will plant wildflowers that are native to Florida at Tom Bennett Park as part of the restoration plan devised by our ecologists in the local office. This will beautify the park's walkways, plus increase the seed supply for native wildflower varieties.
  • In Bakersfield, California, Stantec staff will host an ice cream social and provide entertainment for residents at a senior living facility.
  • In Vancouver, British Columbia, Stantec team members will join members of the British Columbia Mobility Opportunities Society for a hike around Pacific Spirit Regional Park, making use of TrailRiders, an adaptive device that helps people with limited mobility experience hiking. Our volunteers will serve as the "Sherpas" by providing propulsion and stability for these innovative devices.
  • In Calgary, Alberta, nearly 200 team members will work throughout the city with the theme of "An Appetite for Change." They'll pitch in at food banks, community gardens, and shelters to help feed the city's less fortunate.
  • In Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Stantec staff will organize a collection drive for the Emirates Red Crescent's Relief & Emergency program to gather nonperishable food items, clothing, footwear, and toys for families in need.
  • In North Bay, Ontario, 30 team members will paint the town-literally! A mural designed by a Stantec employee will showcase North Bay's most popular landmarks, and Stantec staff will paint the mural in a pedestrian tunnel downtown.
  • In New York, New York, Stantec team members will strip and repaint a 140-year-old wrought-iron fence that surrounds Christopher Park in Greenwich Village.
  • In South Burlington, Vermont, Stantec staff will repair and clean donated bicycles, refurbishing them for low-income Vermonters.
  • In Walnut Creek, California, team members will trace and repaint a child-designed mural at a local Boys & Girls Club.

"Our promise at Stantec is to design with community in mind," says Gomes. "What better way to underscore that promise than to get out into our local communities and roll up our sleeves. Our employees have served their communities for decades, and bringing them together on one day like this truly emphasizes what a difference we can make."
