Starkey Selects MKS Integrity to Drive Product Innovation and Improve Time-to-Market

WATERLOO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 26, 2011) - MKS Inc. (MKS) (TSX:MKX), today announced that Starkey
(http://www.starkey.com/) Laboratories, Inc., a global hearing technology leader, has selected MKS
Integrity(TM) (http://www.mks.com/solutions/discipline/application-lifecycle-management) as the requirements
management platform for the development of hearing instruments that improve quality of life for thousands of
hearing impaired patients worldwide.

Starkey is recognized in more than 100 markets around the world for the quality of its hearing products and its
commitment to its customers. This reputation has led to rapid growth in sales and market share over the last
decade.

As the company expanded and hired new staff, it recognized a growing need for more effective and efficient
requirements management. Requirements (http://www.mks.com/solutions/discipline/rm/requirements-management) were
being tracked in Microsoft(R) Word documents, which made it difficult to make or track
(http://www.mks.com/solutions/discipline/rm/rm-trace) changes in requirements across Starkey's multiple product
lines. With more than 200 separate software requirement specifications at roughly 20-30 pages each, an
estimated 50 percent of development time was spent keeping documents up to date with ongoing requirement and
design changes. As a result of this growing complexity and the lack of scalability in the manual requirement
management methods, the amount of effort required to keep up escalated near a product release date, meaning
that sometimes key features were not ready and had to be removed from products in order to meet product release
schedules (http://www.mks.com/solutions/discipline/relm/release-management).

"In order to deliver the features and products to our customers on schedule, we were pushing our engineering
staff to the limit, which is at odds with our corporate philosophy," said Rob Duchscher, Senior Vice President
of Information Technology at Starkey. "After conducting an evaluation of several requirements management tools,
we concluded that MKS Integrity could meet the needs of all stakeholder groups including product management,
systems engineering and software engineering, and that it is flexible and easy to learn and use. In fact, MKS
Integrity scored higher in our technical review than the other product that made the final round. We are
confident that MKS Integrity's Requirement Management solution will reduce the amount of time we spend managing
documentation and enable our teams to focus more on innovative
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tg9uCD8jD48&;feature=player_embedded) new products for our customers."

"Many of our customers (http://www.mks.com/customers) are faced with the same issues affecting Starkey - rapid
growth, outdated processes, and increasing complexity - all of which impact productivity, release schedules and
ultimately customer and employee satisfaction. We are also seeing growing demand in the medical device industry
for complete development solutions that include risk management and address regulatory compliance. The
flexibility and broad range of capabilities of MKS Integrity will enable Starkey to automate requirements
management, speed development, and ensure that product releases meet stated requirements while still staying on-
schedule and within budget, " said Michael W. Harris, President and CEO at MKS.
