Start the New Year With New Vitality and Better Sleep

Make Natural Energy Part of Your New Year Resolutions in 2012 With Ashley Sleep

ARCADIA, WI--(Marketwire - Dec 13, 2011) - As the holiday approaches, millions of Americans are busy "making their list and checking it twice." But with 2012 almost upon us, another popular list is likely waiting in the wings: a list of New Year resolutions.

Every year, this all-too-familiar ritual has us vowing to do everything from losing weight to spending more time with family. What many people don't realize is that their success may hinge on how much they sleep.

"Whether your New Year resolutions include getting organized, getting fit or getting closer to your family, the one common denominator is the ability to get Better Sleep," says Ben Thorud, Senior Vice President of Ashley Sleep. "Numerous studies suggest that sleep loss can actually affect your body's metabolism, making it difficult to maintain or lose weight. Without a good night's rest, it can also be challenging to find the energy to achieve goals like spending more time with family, organizing your home or starting a fitness program."

Ashley Sleep, one of the fastest growing mattress brands in the world, offers tips to help you get better sleep and enjoy more vitality in 2012:

  • Create a relaxing bedtime routine. Unwind with hot bath, read a book or sip a cup of decaffeinated herbal tea.
  • Exercise regularly, but not too close to bedtime. Leave at least three hours for your body to unwind after a workout.
  • If you're going to drink caffeine/alcohol or eat a big meal, try to avoid doing so too close to bedtime.
  • Avoid naps if you're having a hard time sleeping at night.
  • Turn your bedroom into a dark, quiet sleep sanctuary. If your mattress and/or pillows are no longer offering the level of comfort and support you need for a good night's rest, consider new ones. Ideally, you should replace pillows every year and replace mattresses every five to seven years.
  • Learn to turn off your brain. Worrying about work, the kids or your "to-do list" makes it almost impossible to drift off to sleep. Do mental exercises like conjuring up an image and focusing on its details -- or concentrating on positive thoughts and memories. This may distract you just long enough to fall asleep.
  • Try, try again. If a half-hour has passed and you still can't sleep, go to another room and enjoy a relaxing activity until you feel tired.
