Startec Announces Involvement in Alberta Carbon Trunk Line

Calgary-based Company to Supply Equipment for Carbon-Reducing Project

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Oct. 11, 2011) - Startec, a Calgary-based company specializing in refrigeration, compression and processing solutions, has been commissioned to supply a refrigeration package to liquefy CO2 from a fertilizer plant near Redwater, Alberta, as part of the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line (ACTL) project, the first major carbon capture storage (CSS) program in the province.

"Startec is proud to lend its refrigeration expertise to this project to liquefy CO2 emissions from the Agrium Redwater fertilizer plant so it can be transported via pipeline to an enhanced oil recovery (EOR) project," said Kristi Zadderey, Principal and Managing Director, Startec. "The carbon capture program itself provides environmental and economic benefits by lessening CO2 emissions while increasing economic activity in Alberta."

The CO2 will first be compressed via centrifugal compressors, after which the refrigeration unit Startec designed will liquefy it so that it can be pumped into the ACTL.

"Enhance is pleased to be aligned with a local Calgary-based company with comprehensive refrigeration expertise for the ACTL project," said Blair Eddy, Vice President Operations, Enhance Energy, Inc. "Startec's extensive experience made them an outstanding and obvious choice for the project."

The 240-km ACTL pipeline will transport CO2 to conventional oil recovery projects throughout central Alberta where it will be injected into oil reservoirs to increase the well's productivity by allowing the tough-to-extract oil to flow more freely, further increasing the efficiency of the process.

About the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line (ACTL)

The ACTL will be capable of gathering CO2 from several sources in the Alberta's Industrial Heartland and transporting the CO2 to existing mature oil fields throughout South-Central Alberta. These oilfields will see significant increases in production as CO2 is permanently stored in the reservoir. The capture and permanent storage of CO2 will result in significant reductions in emissions of greenhouse gases in Alberta. The initial supply of CO2 will come from North West Upgrading Inc. and Agrium Inc.
