State of Florida Dedicates Marlin Bay Yacht Club as Clean Marina

Marina Added to Elite List of Clean Marinas in Monroe County

MARATHON, FL--(Marketwire - September 12, 2007) - With thousands of marine facilities and one million registered vessels in Florida, environmental education within the boating community is essential to safeguarding the state's natural resources. Marlin Bay Yacht Club, (http://www.marlinbay-keys.com) the Florida Keys newest and most luxurious resort-style community with a private marina, continues its dedication to the environment by constructing its marina consistent with state-regulated Clean Marina standards. Marlin Bay Yacht Club's designation as a Clean Marina ensures its marina will meet required environmental measures and encourage good boating habits to promote clean water. Currently Florida's Clean Marina Program boasts about 136 Clean Marinas, few of which are located in The Keys and Monroe County.

"The Clean Marina program is just another example of Marlin Bay Yacht Club's commitment to the environment, our neighborhood, and waterway community," said Thad Rutherford, Marlin Bay Yacht Club's project manager. "With the marina construction currently underway and phase one ready by the end of this year [2007], we are working diligently towards pursing the Clean Marina designation."

With single-family homes starting at $1.5 million in a private gated community, the crowning jewel of Marlin Bay Yacht Club is its state-of-the-art marina with 99 deepwater boat slips. Designed to provide a protected harbor for vessels ranging from 24 to 70 feet, the private marina offers boat slips, private dock master, concierge service, complete hookups for every slip, and fast access to the warm-water pleasures of the Atlantic, Gulf and Florida Bay.

The Clean Boating Partnership (CBP) appoints clean marinas, boatyards, retailers and vessels in the State of Florida and is a liaison between Florida's Department of Environmental Protection and all members of the marine industry. Together, these organizations developed management actions beyond regulatory requirements in Florida's waterways. Practices established fall into categories including, hurricane preparedness, proper liquid waste disposal, and "Keys-friendly" boating practices such as safe propulsion systems.

All Clean Marina's are required to remove boats and vessels from the water and secure in a designated and safe location prior to a storm, properly place storage tanks in locations with a roof structure overhead to prevent rainwater or other elements from penetrating the containers, and provide a spill kit on each dock in a convenient, easily accessible location. In addition to compliance with the Clean Marina standards, every facility must also observe the standards below.

Criterion Necessary for Clean Facility Designation

1. Compliance with all environmental regulations and Marina Environmental
    Measures.
2. Designated contact at the marina who will provide customers with
environmental information and clean boating practices.
3. Adequate and well managed waste containers.
4. Clear publication of environmental policies used by the marina.
5. Water and land of the marina must be clean without signs of oil,
    sewage or litter.
6. Marinas agree to discourage boaters from discharging sewage into
    the water.
7. Raw sewage discharge is prohibited by all.
8. Marinas will provide clean restroom facilities and access to drinking
    water.
9. Docks and grounds shall be well maintained for safety and appearance.
10. All marina personnel are regularly trained on marina environmental
    policies and procedures.

Aside the obvious benefits of a safer, cleaner, more environmentally sound marina, Marlin Bay Yacht Club will also be eligible for state grant assistance to adopt marina environmental measures and is offered support in compliance with EPA Stormwater requirements.
