State Street Corporation Honors Three Employees with
Chairman's Community Service Awards

BOSTON--(CCNMatthews - Mar 4, 2005) -

Recognized for Charitable Service to Homes First Foundation of Toronto,
Boston Ronald McDonald House and Five Acres--The Boys' and Girls' Aid
Society of Los Angeles County

State Street Corporation (NYSE:STT), the world's leading provider of
services to institutional investors, has named Jean-Francois Courville
of Toronto, James Hopkins of Boston and Diane Severino of Los Angeles as
recipients of the 2004 Chairman's Community Service Awards. The three
State Street employees were honored for making significant and sustained
volunteer contributions to charitable organizations in their
communities. The awards were presented last night by Ronald E. Logue,
State Street's chairman and chief executive officer, at the Community
Service Recognition reception held at the New England Aquarium.

The Chairman's Community Service Award recognizes State Street's ongoing
commitment to service. The award program, established in 1992,
emphasizes the importance the company places in community involvement,
corporate goodwill and serving the needs of less-advantaged citizens.
Considered among State Street's most prestigious employee honors, the
awards provide a $10,000 grant to the organizations to which the
recipients volunteer their time and service.

"Volunteers are our front-line ambassadors," said Logue. "They deliver
hands-on service to the community and put a face on State Street's
commitment to helping our communities around the world."

The Winners

Jean-Francois Courville, head of State Street Canada and an employee for
more than eight years, was recognized for his commitment to the Homes
First Foundation of Toronto. Currently serving as a director and member
of the Executive Committee for the foundation, Courville was integral in
its establishment, and today it provides financial support for the Homes
First Society, an organization devoted to aiding the homeless of
Toronto. His ability to design and successfully implement strategy and
development plans has added to the Homes First Foundation's
sustainability and impact in its community. In honor of Courville's
award, State Street will make a $10,000 grant to the Homes First
Foundation.

A principal in product engineering and six-year State Street employee,
James Hopkins was recognized for his work with the Boston Ronald
McDonald House in Boston. Hopkins began as a volunteer with the
organization four years ago and has since become a board member,
currently serving as vice president. Continuing his weekly volunteer
shift in addition to his executive involvement with the Boston Ronald
McDonald House, Hopkins devotes approximately 240 hours per year and has
been nominated to be president of the board of directors. State Street
will make a $10,000 grant to the Boston Ronald McDonald house in honor
of Hopkins' award.

Diane Severino, a vice president of Institutional Investor Services and
State Street employee for nearly 18 years, was recognized for her
commitment to Five Acres-The Boys' and Girls' Aid Society of Los Angeles
County. Severino has devoted approximately 360 hours each year to Five
Acres over the course of her eight year involvement with the child
neglect and abuse prevention organization. A board member and president
of the Children's Guild, Severino provides executive guidance as well as
direct service, for which the organization has recognized her as its
Volunteer of the Year. In honor of her award, State Street will make a
$10,000 grant to Five Acres.
