Statement by Minister Joly on Nayrouz

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Sept. 11, 2016) - On September 11, Coptic Christians in Egypt, in Canada and around the world mark the feast of Nayrouz, the first day of the year on the Coptic Orthodox calendar. Nayrouz is a festive occasion to come together with family and friends not only to celebrate, but also to honour those who sacrificed everything and were persecuted for their faith during Roman rule in Egypt.

Canada is made up of people from many different backgrounds. Over the years we have learned to respect the diversity of our origins, as well as the diversity of our opinions, customs and beliefs. As we celebrate Nayrouz, I encourage all Canadians to learn more about this holiday and thank the Coptic Christian communities across Canada for their many contributions to society.

I send my best wishes to everyone celebrating Nayrouz today.
