OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Nov. 14, 2016) -
Diversity is one of Canada's greatest strengths, and Canadians benefit from our country's multiculturalism and spirit of openness.
Today, Sikhs in Canada and around the world celebrate Gurpurab, the birthday of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, founder of the Sikh religion and one of the world's great symbols of peace, unity and social justice. During his lifetime, Guru Nanak travelled the world promoting equality, diversity, service and compassion, which became the core principles of Sikhism.
Many Sikh Canadians bring these values to life and enrich our country every day, reminding us that the principles of inclusion and respect for all are not only at the heart of the Sikh faith, but are also central to all Canadians.
Canada is proud to be home to one of the largest Sikh communities outside India. As Minister of Canadian Heritage, I wish all those celebrating the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji a peaceful and joyous day.
