Statement by Minister MacKay on the Fifth Anniversary of Red Fridays

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 6, 2011) - The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, issued the following statement today:

"I'd like to congratulate Lisa Miller and Karen Boire and the Red Fridays Foundation of Canada on their fifth anniversary event, being held today in Petawawa. I'd like to thank Lisa and Karen; indeed all who have participated in Red Rallies or have worn a red shirt on Fridays, for their unwavering support of our men and women in uniform.

What began as a small grass-roots movement to show support for members of the Canadian Forces and their families has evolved into a nation-wide phenomenon. I'm proud of the support that Canadians have shown their Army, Navy and Air Force - but not surprised by it.

Canadians have a special connection with their military, owing to its presence in cities and towns from coast to coast to coast, as well as our intricate understanding of and pride in Canada's military history.

We all know the importance of the Canadian Forces. Whether at home or abroad, our men and women in uniform are doing their best to make us proud, often in extremely challenging circumstances. That's why these rallies and the support the movement provides are so valuable.

By making a gesture to show our support, such as wearing a red shirt or affixing a yellow ribbon to your vehicle, you are sending a clear message to our troops, to Canada and the rest of the world: that we stand with them."
