Statement by Ministers MacKay and Findlay on Canadian Armed Forces Day 2013

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - June 2, 2013) - The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, and the Honourable Kerry-Lynne D. Findlay, Q.C., Associate Minister of National Defence and Member of Parliament for Delta - Richmond East, issued the following statement today to mark Canadian Armed Forces Day 2013:

"Each year on the first Sunday of June, Canadians recognize the immense contributions and sacrifices made by members of our Armed Forces.

"Our troops serve our country in an array of operations at home and abroad with pride and enthusiasm. Their hard work and dedication directly contributes to the freedoms and security Canadians everywhere enjoy.

"On a daily basis, the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces demonstrate a sense of honour and commitment as they work to defend both Canada and North America. Canadian Armed Forces personnel put their lives on the line as they patrol and secure our frontiers, respond to natural disasters, counter the trafficking of illicit drugs, and carry out search and rescue operations.

"Our troops also demonstrate honour and bravery as they contribute to international peace and security in operations spread across the globe.

"In the last year, Canadian Armed Forces personnel in 15 international operations contributed to maritime security and counter-terrorism operations in the Arabian Sea, supported France's intervention in Mali and continue to play a major role in Afghanistan, acting as advisors and mentors for Afghan security forces.

"In a changing global security environment, the role of the Canadian Armed Forces cannot be underestimated. We would like to extend our most sincere gratitude and respect to all our men and women in uniform, and to the families who support them. Today we encourage all Canadians to celebrate and honour our Armed Forces."
