Statement by the Minister of International Cooperation the Honourable Beverley J. Oda

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 22, 2008) - "Our government welcomes the praise from UNICEF Canada's CEO, Nigel Fisher, for our innovative programs and research aimed at reducing child deaths in poverty-stricken African countries.

As Mr. Fisher recognized, this government is assuming a leadership role in successful programs such as the Accelerated Child Survival and Development Initiative as well as in projects such as the Initiative to Save a Million Lives, announced last fall by the Prime Minister.

Not only is Canada the leading provider of vitamin A supplements in developing countries, an initiative that has averted more than two million deaths, but we are also the leading donor country in financing insecticide-treated bed nets to protect African families from malaria.

We are committed to doubling our aid to Africa by the next fiscal year, bringing it to more than $2.1 billion annually. In addition, as we promised in the Speech from the Throne, this government will ensure greater results for children around the world."
