Statement by the Minister of Public Safety on Maher Arar

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Dec. 15, 2006) - Today, the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, released this statement regarding Maher Arar:

"Justice O'Connor's report made clear that what happened to Mr. Arar took place under the previous government. Canada's New Government quickly indicated that it accepted all 23 of Justice O'Connor's recommendations, including the question of an apology and compensation. I am pleased to say that our new government has already started to act upon the recommendations.

Concerning Mr. Arar remaining on the U.S. border watch list, I wrote to my counterpart in Washington, Mr. Michael Chertoff, Secretary of Homeland Security, to indicate that Canada had removed Mr. Arar from Canadian Border Services Agency's lookout list. I raised this matter again when meeting Secretary Chertoff and U.S. Attorney General, Alberto R. Gonzales in North Carolina in mid-November.

I have received assurances from the Americans that no information provided to them by Canadian authorities was used to place Mr. Arar on a watch list or would be used to deny Mr. Arar entry into the United States.
