Statement from CUPE Ontario President Fred Hahn on the Death of Toronto Police Sergeant Ryan Russell

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 12, 2011) - Today, I placed a call to Toronto Police Association President Mike McCormack and asked him to convey CUPE Ontario's deepest condolences to the family of Sergeant Ryan Russell, whose tragic death has touched all of us.

Ryan Russell was a devoted husband and father, and a proud public employee. He strove, as thousands of other men and women do every day, to do his part to make the city a better and safer place to live for everyone who calls Toronto home.

It is all too easy in this day and age to lose sight of the fact that men and women like Ryan Russell are more than abstract figures hidden away in departmental budgets. Behind the numbers are living, breathing people with families, hopes and dreams, who put in an honest day's work towards building a better community, building a better Ontario.

Every day, thousands of public employees do their part, often putting themselves at risk in the process.

We hope this tragic event brings increased recognition of our collective responsibility to make Ontario a place where every worker will come home safely to their families when their shift ends.
