Statement from Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day on the Dismantling of a Drug Smuggling Operation at Ottawa International Airport

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - April 26, 2007) - Today, the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, issued this statement following the success of Project Ardent, to dismantle a drug smuggling operation at the Ottawa International Airport.

"On behalf of the Canada's New Government and all Canadians, I wish to commend the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Canada Border Services Agency, the Ottawa Police Service and the Ottawa Airport Authority for their excellent work in dismantling this drug smuggling operation.

Thanks to the ongoing efforts of all those who participated in Project Ardent since May 2006, three adult males have been arrested in relation to the smuggling of over $170 thousand worth of Khat, an herb designated a controlled substance in Canada.

The success of this operation is testimony to the skill and commitment of our law enforcement officers as well as other officials when it comes to protecting the health and safety of Canadians.

Canada's New Government is committed to ensuring that our law enforcement agencies have the tools and resources they need to fulfill their policing duties and keep our communities safe."
